High Voltage DC Applications: Green Energy and FMPS

High Voltage DC Applications: Green Energy and FMPS

In recent years, MEAN WELL has introduced multiple High Voltage DC (HVDC) product lines to support new energy applications, including green energy, energy saving, energy storage, and smart industry fields. These applications encompass photovoltaic power generation, energy storage, wind power generation, and more. This article highlights two HVDC applications: Solar Tracker and Class 4 Power System (Fault Managed Power System, FMPS).

Solar Tracker

Solar power plants generate megawatts of power using large-scale solar arrays with voltages ranging from 1000V to 1500V DC. To optimize power generation, these high voltages are used to rotate solar arrays, ensuring they track the sun throughout the day. MEAN WELL's RSDH-150 and RSDH-300 HVDC input DC-to-DC power supplies are ideal for this application, stepping down the 1000V-1500V DC to power motors that position the solar arrays and charge batteries that reset the array positions after sunset. Additionally, the RSDH-150 and RSDH-300 feature semi-encapsulation and can operate at -40°C, making them suitable for outdoor installations.

Class 4 Power System (FMPS)

Fault Managed Power Systems (FMPS) consist of a fault-managed power transmitter and receiver connected by a cabling system. These systems monitor circuits for faults and control the power transmitted to limit energy and power delivery into any faults. The advantage of Class 4 Power Systems over AC power includes lower installation costs (as they do not require conduit to enclose long power cables), remote monitoring and control, and expandability.

Class 4 Power Systems utilize HVDC at 350V-360V DC at the transmitter input and receiver output to minimize voltage and power loss over long distances. MEAN WELL's HVDC input and output power supplies are crucial in these systems. For example, the NCP-3200-380 scalable rack solution, with a 260V-400V DC output, supplies power to Class 4 transmitters. The DDRH-240 and RSDH-300 series, with high input voltages of 250V-1500V DC, can step down the Class 4 receiver output to power low voltage devices, such as PoE equipment.

Summary

MEAN WELL's HVDC power supplies provide efficient solutions for Solar Tracker and Class 4 Power System applications. The RSDH/DDRH series steps down high voltage to power low voltage devices, while the NCP series converts AC to HVDC to power transmitters.
